My wife and I are beginning to pray about looking for another church and have done a little reading about a few different churches. One of the ones we stumbled across was mentioned in a thread here recently - Vinyard church.
While reading their "theological booklet", I came across the following:
"We value being CULTURE CURRENT. We aim to develop an atmosphere of ease, and to speak, act, and dress in ways in which our culture can respond positively. For example, we reflect this value through worship music that is of a popular style.181"
The reference "181" at the end refers to:
181 I Corinthians 9:19-23: Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
(This is a direct quote, and I realize it is not KJV.)
I am having difficulty reconciling this with what we believe about modesty and being in the world but not of it. This denomination seems to justify being, at least to some extent, worldly based on this scripture.
How does this really fit in? Based on other scriptures, I do not believe it is a license to be wordly. But, I know the scriptures do not contradict themselves. Is it being taken out of context (I tried to read around it, but wasn't sure)?
