I have been brought up with the truth that Sunday is the Lord's Day, and we are to honor it. I have been thinking a lot about that, and exactly what does it mean to honor the Lord's Day? I know we go to church, but what else should we be doing or not doing on the Lord's Day? I guess I started thinking about it tonight, when my dad and brothers decided to hook up the TV to watch the Super Bowl. It's like the only channel we get here, it's never been hooked up before, and we had to buy some "rabbit ears" so we could just get that one channel. That really bothered me, because back when my parents were married they decided no TV at all in the house (we do have a VCR and DVD player for movies, but I'm not sure I'm even comfortable with even that, I'm seeing more and more wrong even with "good" movies). It bothered me because 1)we don't watch tv, 2) It's Sunday, and even though the vehicle is broke down and we can't make it to church on Sunday nights, watching a football game is not focusing on the Lord. I started wondering how many other things we might do on Sundays that may not be honoring Him or focusing on Him? I think about all the time I spend on the internet on Sunday afternoons--is that right, or is it okay depending on what I'm looking at? I guess I'm kinda confused about the best way to honor the Lord's Day, but I'm not really sure where to look in the Bible to find the answers.

I've been thinking about that very thing today.
There are a lot of churches that have some sort of "service" to go along with the SuperBowl. Thankfully, at our church, we don't do anything like that. But, as was probably common all over the country, our attendance was WAY down this evening.
It really has made me consider the activities that are honoring to the Lord. And those that aren't.
I'm not interested in the Superbowl or really even professional sports at all. I never really have been, so I have a bit of trouble seeing what all the hype is about anyway......

The church we attended Sunday never has an evening service unless there is special meetings, but they don't watch regular television that I know of.
All I have to say is, if someone can watch any football game on television, they are carnal. Period.
See my post on the General Board about the verses the Lord showed me over the weekend about tv/vcr/dvd this weedend.

Dear Sister, I was convicted not too long ago to make Sunday more special than other days. Of course we honor the Lord every day But we now try to keep Sunday "the day that belongs to the Lord". I agree with what the men (and you) said - no football! We do not watch television anyway, so that's not a problem. Here's a few ways we keep Sunday for the Lord: we listen to sermons on tape, we do a Bible study together, we read extra in the Bible together, we sing more hymns, we do our own personal studies, and we play godly 'games' = we have one game called "Bible Trivia"; it's a game I played at my Grandma's when I was little, she gave it to me a few years ago We also have a Bible verse memory 'game'. Other ways we keep Sunday for the Lord - no shopping, no going out to eat (not that we do that much anyway! However a lot of people at the churches we have been visiting like to go eat on Sunday; we humbly say 'no thank you'), and so on. If we have an opportunity, we will go visit a shut in or have a meal at someone's house if we are invited.

This issue has also been on my mind lately. One thing I have been guilty of is leaving my major housework until the day before I have to go back to work. That's pure laziness. I am trying to get all of my housework done by Saturday evenings so that we can do as God commanded, and rest on the Lord's Day. It's the least I can do, right?
God bless you all,
Traci
