In church right now we are going though Genesis in adult class.
I present the following questions- Where Adam and Eve/ Cain and Abel the only one alive at the time of Cain slaying Abel? Was Noah's three sons the only children/sons he had? How long did it take to build the ark?
These are some things that have came to my mind while studing this , I know what I believe the Bible may say about it , but would like some thoughts / discussion from some of you others.

That is correct Sister Debbie although I believe it was that it took him 120 years to complete the ark. I take that to mean it took that long to build it and assemble all of the inhabitants. It had to have taken him some time to gather up two of everything.

Brother Randy, those are questions that I do not know whether they can be answered or not. Of course we shall know the answers once we get to heaven.
As far as Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel, I believe there had to be others in the world. There were wives involved yet there is no mention of other children of Adam and Eve. There may have been others present throughout the world yet it is not important enough for us to know that God did not feel it should be put in the Bible.
The Bible also only mentions the three sons of Noah. Again I believe if God wanted us to know more than that He would have told us so.
I know this doesn't help much but to speculate on such things only causes confusion and doubt. For example when the Bible says there were giants on the earth in those days I believe that refers to dinosaurs. There are some who say it refers to a group of really tall people. It doesn't really matter. The Bible mentions dragons and also leviathan. That means a crocodile or some other large sea animal. That would account for what the scientists say were dinosaurs that live in the water. However we do not know for certain.
In a Bible study or even in presenting such in a class setting I think it wise to admit to people there are questions we have that are not answered in the Bible. We must be truthful about them. Some will tell us they know the answers but we must be like the Bereans and check those things against scripture. If it is not in the Bible it cannot be made doctrine.

It does appear that it took Noah 120 years to complete the building of the ark. It would be reasonable to expect that some of that time was used to gather the food necessary to support the animals and the people. It is possible that Noah had other children, but only the 3 sons and their 3 wives are listed as joining Noah and his wife in the ark. Gen 9:19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
Three verses would suggest that Noah did not have to gather the animals, but that God Himself brought the animals to Noah. Gen 6:20b ...two of very sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. Gen 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark... and Gen 7:15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark...
I do believe that we can assume that their were other children alive at the time that Cain killed Abel. He married one of his sisters and begat children before there is mention of Eve bearing Seth. I don't think the Bible mentions every person born.
What a great topic. But I would have to agree that we may not know all the answers until we get to heaven and I have a feeling that we won't even desire to know the answers then.

Randy,
I got the 120 years from Gen 6:3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

In verse 5:32 we have - And Noah was five hundred years old and he begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. In 6:13, 14 we have God telling Noah to build the Ark.
In chapter 11 verse10 These are the generations of Shem; Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood.
Unless I am missing some thing here I guess I don't see the 120 years for the building of the Ark??
